Eleven Bandiere Blu have been awarded this year in Sicily, one more than last year, but the island is relegated to ninth place (in 2021 it was eighth) in the ranking of beaches of excellence. In total, throughout Italy, 427 beaches were awarded for the quality of the sea and for the services.

The ranking is drawn up every year by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Danish NGO that assigns the prize based on quality parameters such as the healthiness of the water but also the quality of the services offered.
The awarded Sicilian beaches
The quality of the water and services were awarded as the highest in Roccalumera, Alì Terme, Lungomare Santa Teresa di Riva, Lampare beach in Tusa, Acquacalda in Lipari, Furci Siculo (new entry) all in the province of Messina.
The award goes also to Marina di Modica, Raganzino in Pozzallo, the first stretch of Ciriga in Ispica, Marina di Ragusa in the Ragusa area and the Lido Fiori Bertolino in Menfi, in the province of Agrigento. Among the 82 awarded Italian tourist destinations, Capo d’Orlando stands out in Sicily.
The ranking of the Italian regions for Bandiere Blu
Liguria always leads the way with 32 award-winning locations, followed by Campania, Tuscany and Puglia with 18 awards. Calabria rises in the ranking which together with the Marche obtains 17 awards. Sardinia reaches 15 locations, Abruzzo 14, Sicily, as mentioned, 11, Lazio loses an award and reaches an altitude of 10.
The 10 awards of Trentino Alto Adige remain unchanged. Emilia Romagna has 9 award-winning locations, as does Veneto, while Basilicata got 5. Piedmont gets 3 awards, Friuli Venezia Giulia reconfirms its 2 awards of 2021. Last regions in the ranking, Molise and Lombardy, both with one.
